I just started teaching a biology course for non-biology majors this month. It is a 5 week course and I have decided to teach about a pretty interesting topic. So far most the students are enjoying the course but I cringe at some to the apathy some students exhibit. I refuse to let this blog turn into a bitch and moaning blog but I do find it disconcerting when a student comes up to me after a hour of class and asks if he is registered for my course.

My response was something like: “You don’t know what courses you signed up for?”

His response: “Nah man.”

He was registered thankfully.

Another student said they were going to miss the last week of class and exam. I tried to explain that missing 1/5 of the class was not a good idea and that the final exam and group project occur in that week meaning he will miss 2/3 of the total points for the course. He did not seem to care.
